Many of you will be aware that our Highfield, Timaru clinic is a BESTPRACTICE® accredited clinic. BESTPRACTICE® accreditation is only valid for 2 years, after which the auditors come through again. Our 2 years were up in November and in came the auditors. The “bar had been raised” with regards to requirements so a number of new protocols and SOPs had to be instigated. I am pleased to say that we passed with flying colours! In fact, the auditor left us with the comment that there were

"NO AREAS OF CONCERN AT ALL!"

Those of you who have been audited yourself for what ever reason will appreciate that auditors like to find at least one small issue to justify their existence, so we are very pleased, as you would expect, with this result!

What is a BESTPRACTICE® Clinic?

A clinic that has achieved the BESTPRACTICE® Accreditation has met the rigorous standards defined by the BESTPRACTICE® Committee of the New Zealand Veterinary Association.

How will BESTPRACTICE® benefit my animals?

The standards cover a range of areas including everything from the way a practice is run and the ongoing training of staff, to record keeping, storage, prescribing and dispensing of medicines. As a responsible animal owner you need to know that the veterinary practice you choose meets the highest industry standards. A participating practice is required to meet all components that make up the BESTPRACTICE® standards.

What does a clinic have to do to become accredited?
  • 24 hour service
  • Personnel
  • Communication
  • Premises
  • Equipment and facilities
  • Storage, prescription and dispensing of medicines
  • Diagnostic services
  • Safety
  • Waste disposal
At an NZVA Accredited Clinic you will find:
  • Care: staff who care about your business and your animals
  • Training: qualified and competent veterinarians who are trained and experienced in veterinary medicine, surgery, animal health and welfare and farm advisory services
  • Professionally trained veterinary nurses and/or technicians
  • Staff that are continually learning, improving and developing. The standards ensure that they have access to up to date materials and have the time to undertake ongoing professional development
  • Comfort: a comfortable, secure and safe environment for owners, patients and staff at the clinic hospital
  • Information: well organised data storage systems to allow for ease of updating and access to your animals' health records
  • Safety for farm animals: clear labelling and appropriate packaging of all dispensed items so that you know exactly how and when to medicate your animals and the witholding periods that must be observed
  • Service
  • Well-presented and trained staff
  • The right number of staff to provide excellent service, care and attention for your animals
  • 24-hour emergency service
  • Systems in place to assist in meeting Best On-Farm Practice and all MAF animal health standards
  • Facilities: modern, well-maintained facilities and equipment
  • Medicines: a wide range of veterinary medicines will be readily available and these will be stored and dispensed according to manufacturers instructions
How do I know that the clinic's standards will be maintained?

A clinic must pass an audit inspection before achieving accreditation. Accredited clinics have to apply to be audited every two years and have to meet the standards set before they receive the accreditation again.
Independent trained veterinary auditors carry out these inspections. The inspections are carried out on a regular basis to ensure that clinics remain true to the BESTPRACTICE® standards set by the New Zealand Veterinary Association.

If you have persevered and read all of this, you can tell that this is an accreditation that we are really proud of.

Washbar Soap

14/9/2013

Hayley has just found this new product that we are now selling at Highfield. Both Jess and Hayley have used it on their dogs and think it is just the “bees knees”.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, why not give your dog a wash with this new product.

Picture
Original WashBar Soap is ideal for all dogs. Good old fashioned soap that cleans your dog, leaving it smelling fresh and lemony. Our active ingredients are natural with anti allergenic, anti-inflammatory and insecticidal properties. The soap is designed to treat skin disorders, repel fleas and soothe sensitive skin.

Active Ingredients:
Neem Oil
Neem Leaf
Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil – 100% Pure Essential Oil

Soap bars are naked – we try not to be wasteful with unnecessary packaging.

To Wash:
Wet your dog all over and rub the soap into their coat and skin. Lather it up giving them a good massage. Bath time should be an enjoyable time for everyone. It’s important to thoroughly rinse after using any soap or shampoo.

Important - avoid their eyes; soap was never intended to clean eyes!

Neem Oil (Azadirachta Indica) we source ours from India where it has been used for over 2,000 year in Ayvrvedic (Indian) Medicine. The oil is pressed from the seeds of the tree. It is natural plant extract that is environmentally safe. It has been used for thousands of years as a natural insecticide – it is known to neutralise and repel over 500 pests including fleas, lice, ticks and mites. It neutralises pests by rendering them useless, they just stop functioning, forgetting to eat, breed, lay eggs, fly or even move about.

Neem Leaf (Azadirachta Indica) Also sourced from India, where it has been used for thousands of years to treat skin disorders. It has a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action. Our customers talk about the redness on their dog’s skin disappearing after they have used our soap.

Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil – Leptospermum petersonii 100% Pure Essential Oil. We source ours from Australia where it is grown and extracted using the steam distillation method.
Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil is not Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) with a lemon scent added, it is a completely different plant, which is naturally lemon scented.

The plant is known for its anti-infectious, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and insect repellent properties. It also has mild sedative properties which can relieve anxiety, depression, nervous tension and stress. For dogs that are a little nervous at bath time the aroma should help soothe and calm them.

Best of all - it has a strong lemon or citrus scent leaving your dog smelling really fresh and clean after a bath.

Our current merchandising manager Warren Walker is finishing up with us this month, after 8 years with the company, to concentrate more on his farming enterprises.  We wish him all the best in his endeavours.

We have employed Guy Dockrill to pick up where Warren left off.  Guy has 30 years involvement in the agricultural sector dealing with a full range of production animals, and a variety of management systems and practices.

Guy lives in Timaru, and while he will be based in the Fairlie office he will be covering all our farming clients. He will be getting in touch with as many clients as he can over the next few months to introduce himself, and familiarize himself with your requirements.    As part of this process, he can help you with animal health plans and budgets, and streamline your orders to suit your requirements.

Guy will be starting with us on the 19th August and Warren will be fazing out after this time.  Guy will be taking over Warrens phone so the contact phone number will remain the same 027 256 8079.

The Geraldine Clinic has just taken delivery of a brand new IM3 Dental Deck. The machine is a top of the line dental machine, very similar to what your own dentist uses. With high and low speed burs, polishing cups and ultrasonic scaler, this machine enables us to give the best possible dental care to your pets. We follow this up with advice on how to care for your pets teeth from our qualified veterinary nurses.  If you have had toothache yourself, you know how painful it can be. Think about how the tartar build up and rotten teeth in your pet must feel.
Contact us now for a dental evaluation and if required dental treatment.
