Caring for a new kitten

Summer time is kitten season!  If you’ve just brought home a cute little bundle of fluff, here’s what you need to know.

  1. Getting them settled at home.  It’s best to keep them inside, especially while they are young.  They will need somewhere to hide, somewhere to sleep and a clean litter tray to do their business.
  2. Kittens need a good quality kitten diet.  They are growing quickly and very active so need the right balance of nutrients so keep them healthy.
  3. They’ll need regular worming every two weeks from two weeks of age until they are three months old.  Roundworms can make them very unwell, and can also be passed on to humans, especially children.  We stock tiny palatable tablets that make worming far less traumatic than it was in the old days.
  4. Flea treatment – No one wants a flea infestation so prevention is best.  Fleas can also transmit tapeworms so we recommend regular treatment with a quality kitten friendly product.
  5. They’ll need vaccination –  Diseases like cat flu are really common, very infectious and can cause a lifetime health problems.  We recommend your kitten receives three kitten vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age, followed by annual boosters.
  6. Last but not least, kittens need lots of love and attention.  We have a great range of toys and treats for kittens to keep them happy and entertained, and hopefully distract them from attacking your furniture!
